Getting Started with ABA Therapy Guide

If you have a child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy can help them develop basic and essential life skills to improve their quality of life. ABA therapy is widely known as an effective, evidence-based treatment for ASD that can foster the development of skills while reducing negative behaviors.

Knowing where to begin can be overwhelming, but we’re here to help guide you through the process of getting started. If you are interested in your child beginning ABA therapy services, the steps below will outline the basics of what you need to know.

Step 1: In order for your child to be approved for ABA services, your insurance provider will require a current copy of your child’s psychological and/or diagnostic evaluation to confirm they have an autism diagnosis. Specific requirements will vary across different insurance payors and may include a prescription for ABA therapy by your child’s primary care physician. (See our Autism Diagnostic Providers Directory for a list of available providers in your area.)

Step 2: Contact your insurance provider to see whether ABA therapy is a covered benefit. If you would like assistance with this step, please complete our Intake Form and a dedicated member of our Intake team can help to confirm your coverage and provide you with a Verification of Benefits (VOB) summary.

Step 3: After reviewing your benefits summary, you will be able to determine what options are available for your family. If applicable, it is also important to research any secondary insurance payor coverage. Selecting an ABA provider that is built on a foundation of quality treatment is important and we recommend researching several organizations to determine the best fit for your child.

Deciding to start ABA services is an important decision and having the right information and supportive team can make a huge difference.
