ABA therapy is widely known as the most effective, evidence-based treatment for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There are several career opportunities in this field based on education, experience level, and interests.
Behavior Technicians implement client goals created by a BCBA in each child’s individualized treatment. They work 1:1 with clients and their families to develop social skills, living skills, and learning skills. Individuals can become nationally certified as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) and accredited by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) through a 40-hour training program and competency assessment. BCBAs provide high-quality ABA evaluation, therapy, and consultation services for children with autism, as well as ongoing support and supervision for their team members and the families they serve. They conduct behavioral assessments, design individualized treatment plans for clients, and supervise RBTs as they implement ABA techniques. Becoming a BCBA requires a master’s degree in ABA, Psychology, or a related field. To acquire the certification, you must complete a fieldwork requirement along with the BCBA® exam. Clinic Directors operate with guidance from regional and executive leadership to provide overall quality assurance and managerial support to local clinics. They oversee the BCBAs and RBTs to ensure all clients are receiving the highest quality of treatment. Additionally, the Clinic Director serves as the Lead BCBA and utilizes their skills to perform assessments and develop treatment plans for clients.
For individuals who are interested in serving clients and their families on the operational side of ABA therapy, many clinics have Office Manager positions. The Office Manager is responsible for maintaining the clinic schedule as well as keeping all information accurate and up to date. They relay clinic information, appointment details, and paperwork requirements to the families. This individual is a key player in the operations of the clinic to make certain that clients are well informed and have a positive experience.
